Hello All,

I have a basic question, we have 400 named user license(nup) for oracle 11g database.
How many instances I am allowed to install in the same server?
Does the total number of users for all the instances should be equal to 400 or each instance can have 400 connection?
Sorry I am new to licensing area.
Thanks for your help.
Dan

If you have four hundred named user licence then only those people can access the database. You can install as many instances as you want (or have the resources to accomodate) of Oracle Server but why would you want to?

Thanks for your reply.
We have an application needs 3 instances (50G total size)!
The server have the resources to accomodate.
I didn't know these 400 users can access the three instances or do I have to buy extra user licences.

Are you confusing an Oracle database instance with a SQL Server one? Oracle database instance.

You license NUPs per machine. 400 NUPs is actually quite a lot. You are using Windows, therefore Intel architecture chips. If you have no more than 16 cores, processor licensing would be cheaper, simpler to manage, and give unlimited access to the instances on the server. Of course, if you have more than 16 cores then NUP will be cheaper - if you can name the individuals and keep the total who have any access to 400 or less.

It is worth discussing this sort of thing with a partner who can advise on how to minimize your license requirement. I work for one who is pretty good at that Smile

@gazzag: we need three instances for the application needs (1 for the ETL, 1 for the consolidation and 1 for the reporting).

@Jhon, thanks for your reply, it is very clear,
we were in VMware cluster environment with vmotion enabled. Oracle is asking us to license 96 cores (4*6*4) 48 processors.

with out vmotion enabled we have 24 cores!

Thank you all for your reply.

You could have multiple schemas within one database instance.
