The Database Gateway for SQL Server costs USD17.5k per CPU (ignoring the core factor) whereas the ODBC gateway is free. If all I need to do is run some SQLs (SELECT and DML, no DDL) against a SQL Server database, is there any reason to buy the SQL Server Gateway? The frequency of execution and the volumes of data would not be very high.
Is there any expense on the SQL Server side for either solution?

I realize that no-one is going to give solid advice on anything related to licensing, but some general comments would be helpful.

Thank you for any insight.
