How to change Character set for oracle 8i database. Is there anyway to change the Character set without affecting the current database.

the correct way to establish the database characterset is only at DB creation time.

If I remember correctly, I used to do it by updating the character set in sys.props$ and then re-creating the controlfile. You risk destroying the database, you know. Better ask Oracle support - you do have a sustaining support contract?

It depends from which character set to which character set and use csscan tool.

Sure, 8.1.7 is eligible for sustaining support indefinitely. Or so Oracle says at the moment.

I will consider all information that you guys mentioned.

Michel I will try csscan tool to check the database is ready to convert or not. Thanks for your all help.

And I was in a notion that support status says NO MORE. And Orafaq says 8i support status

Not sure about Oracle Lifetime Support Policies.
