Gurus,
Good day again.
Just for your confirmation.
We perform an OS backup (datafiles, control files, redo log files)
yesterday while the database is online.
A contractor called us today that he did something wrong to the
database and wants to restore the database in yesterday's state.
Can we restore directly overwriting the current database files
(datafiles, control files, redo log files) with the said OS backup
we did yesterday without shutting down the database?
Would it still be consistent?
Thanks for the info.
Regards,

If you put the database in backup mode, yes.
If not, your backup may is most likely invalid unless you are lucky.
Edit: I assumed you were in ARCHIVELOG mode, if not the backup is anyway unusable.
Regards
Michel

Furthermore, you cannot do this without shutting down the database.
