Hello,

I am looking for reliable but cost effective options for replication to a standby database. We are running 10g SE on RHEL 4 and working on a DR plan that involves a standby DB at an offsite location. There is a VPN between the two sites and our goal is to have close to real-time replication. I have looked at DataGuard, GoldenGate, and SharePlex, all look like solid options but way too expensive, the SE licenses alone are already taxing our budget. I'm considering setting up the standby DB manually, but it looks to be a pretty involved process; I only recently inherited DBA duties and am by no means and expert. Does anyone have any other suggestions/options?

Thanks much,

The manual standby is a good solution, and not actually that complex to setup. Google around, and you will find examples of scripts to automate the process. If you have trouble, I have some scripts somewhere that I can dig out. You can limit the maximum data loss to single digit minutes.
If licence costs really are a problem, an alternative is to use RMAN incrementally updated backups. You can achieve a similarly low worst case data loss, without needing to licence a second machine at all.

ps - welcome to the forum.

Thanks John, we're doing a daily RMAN backup now, our recovery time with that plan is about 8 hours though, being asked to get that much closer to real-time. It's looking more and more like manual standby is the way we'll go. I think I have it mostly worked out, it's just not really my area of expertise, yeah any scripts you are willing to share would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

In Part 6 Stéphane explains the principles and show how to set up a handmade standby database (including scripts for Linux, fot a 10 minutes lag).
