Well, any book you choose, make sure it covers the most recent Apex version (which is 4.1 at the moment). I bought a 3.2 version book (Apex - essentials and more) which is good, but - 4.x brings so many new things (for example, I'm fascinated with dynamic actions) that you might regret why reading something old at all (as if you were reading Windows 95 manual (OK, not exactly the same, but you understand the point, I hope)).
P.S. Why did I buy 3.2 at all? Because 4.x wasn't released, yet.
