I have seen at many places even for small database when it comes to choosing the HBA for storage everyone goes for 4G FC,6GB SAS and 10GB FCoE.
If we go with a storage with 50 disks each 15k speed and Oracle block size 8K and calculate the IOPS it works well with a 1GB transport link between the host and storage.
Does one really need this high capacity HBA's?

I don't understand a single word of what you say.
We are mostly database administrators, please post some definitions: what are
- HBA
- 4G FC
- 6GB SAS
- 10GB FCoE
- 15k speed
- IOPS

Michel

Sorry to say this but its like a Software Engineer asking what is a CPU,CDROM,RAM.
A good DBA should be aware about the hardware on which he runs the database like Storage,RAID,transport medium etc.

HBA: Host bus Adapter
4Gb FC or 6GB SAS or 10GB FCoE are the transmission medium for connecting the storage to the host
15k is the rpm speed of the Harddisk
IOPS is Input Output per second.
