I asked
1/ you read the guide
2/ you posted the "edition" not the version.
Post "select * from v$version"

Before, Please read OraFAQ Forum Guide and How to use [code] tags and make your code easier to read.
Make sure that lines of code do not exceed 80 characters when you format.
Indent the code, use code tags and align the columns in result.
Use the "Preview Message" button to verify.

Michel

It seems you can't read; in this case, forget Oracle and start something else.

How do you expect the OP to query v$version if they can't start the DB?

Maybe changing the RAC parameters to non-RAC ones, for instance "cluster_database=FALSE".
Starting in RAC mode is not mandatory. Wink

So maybe you should point that out in the first place rather than insisting the OP run a query that they currently can't?

Installation Guide provides complete & correct steps for successful software & database installation.
If you can't follow the enumerated steps in the Installation Guide, why should we expect you to do better with same words here?

what is your system's hostname & IP#?

what results when you issue OS commands below

ping <hostname>
ping <IP#>
lsnrctl status

This is the first time I have ever seen "ping hostname" display the MAC address!
bcm@bcm-laptop:~$ ping bcm-laptop
PING localhost (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.087 ms
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.083 ms
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.081 ms
^C
--- localhost ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 1999ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.081/0.083/0.087/0.010 ms
bcm@bcm-laptop:~$

Part of me suspects that if "ping inspiron-pc" were to display 172.16.66.14 instead the errors would no longer occur.

Is any type of OS Virtual Machine involved in this configuration?
