Hi,

I have a doubt in RMAN. The scenario is:
We take online backup on all days and offline backup on Sunday only. My question is do i need to copy the archives also in offline backup?

What happens when i shutdown the database (the database is in archivelog mode) and alter the database to be in noarchivelog and open the database to do offline backup.

Please help me.

Thanks,

1/ Which archived logs are you thinking of?
2/ It depends on your restore/recover policy.

You cannot open a database to do an offline backup.
By definition, an offline backup is done when the database is not open.

And my question is: why do you do an offline backup anyway?

Michel

Still the same questions:
1/ Which archived logs are you thinking of? Before or after offline backup?
2/ It depends on your restore/recover policy. Tell us which service do you guarantee to your client.

And my question is: why do you do an offline backup anyway?

Regards
Michel

This is not right. In fact, it is potentially disastrous. If your client demands on offline backup (and, as Michel says, you should ask them about that) you must do it in archivelog mode, with the archivelogs.

Suppose my database is in archivelog mode. For some reason the client needs offline backup. i would do the following steps:
1) shutdown the database and set the database in noarchivelog mode.
2)take offline backup and restart the server in archivelog mode again.

In the above steps, i would like to know if there will be any problem since we are not copying archives (the resolog archives which are stored with this parameter 'archive_log_dest=e:\archives') generated when we were in archivelog mode.

Hope you got my question

Wrong! A client NEVER needs this. A client needs you are able to restore and recover his database, how you odo it he does not care.

And your backup is useless (with or without archived logs) to recover. You will be able to ONLY restore at the time of the backup and NOT to recover.

Michel
