I have a cataloged RMAN Backup from 2009 that I need to restore but I cannot seem to restore the particular control file from the tape using the NetBackup Media Manager (SBT_TAPE). The backup commands include the current controlfile.

Unless I am missing something here. The correct tape has been loaded into the library and mouted read-only. Anybody ?

The status is EXPIRED, this means the backup is no more there.

The data is still on tape is there no way I can restore it with or without the catalog database ?

Try crosschecking the backupset.
If RMAN really finds the file, the status should be changed to AVAILABLE in output of 'list backup'.
