Hi guys I want to know the difference between backup,backup set and backup piececs in Rman.

1.Each backup set may consist of many backup pieces which are nothing but datafiles.

2.Each backup may consist of many backup sets.

Am I right about this?If so will all backup sets within a backup contain the same backup set number or different one.

Database Backup and Recovery Basics
For instance,
Chapter 1 Backup and Recovery Overview
Section 1.5 Backup and Recovery with RMAN
Paragraph 1.5.3.3 About Image Copies, Backup Sets and Backup Pieces
And follow the link "About RMAN Backup Formats: Image Copies and Backup Sets".

Regards
Michel

I went through it.So suppose my backup consists of 3 backup sets.

1 backset--->datafile 1,2
2 backupset--->datafile 3,4
3 backupset--->archivelog

Now in my backup i have lost backup set 2 and 3 and I have only backup set 1.Does that mean RMAN can use it to recover datafile 1 and 2.

Thanks
Sekar

Yes and no, it depends of the purpose of your recovery and what you have beside that.

The best way to understand is to test by yourself.
Create a database and make some backup and recovery.
