SQL> alter system set sga_max_size=1G scope=spfile;

System altered.

SQL> startup force
ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exis
SQL> show parameter sga
ERROR:
ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLE

SQL> startup force
ORA-24324: service handle not initialized
ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
SQL> startup
ORA-24324: service handle not initialized
ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
SQL> startup force
ORA-24324: service handle not initialized
ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist

sqlplus is tightly linked in Oracle code and sometimes it happens (above all with a shutdown abort) due to the relation between process and OS shared memory, I think.
