If operating in ARCHIVELOG mode, the DBA also has the option of backing up different parts of the database over a period of time, thereby constructing a whole database backup piece by piece.
how is this whole database backup done please clarify?
what will be the recovery procedure?

as i was going through some book it was written "If operating in ARCHIVELOG mode, the DBA also has the option of backing up different parts of the database over a period of time, thereby constructing a whole database backup piece by piece. "
so i am not able understand the concept of "how to build whole database backup piece by piece over a period of time " and how it differ from full backup(offline).

I don't know as I don't what you mean by these 2 terms, for me whole and full are identical.
Maybe you can say that "full database" is using "backup full database" when "whole database" is backup all the components of the database piece by piece.
"piece by piece" means "part of database (one or several tablespaces) by part of database".
