Good question and here is my geek answer.
Ok, I don't know how to read/understand it. I know how to read/pronounce it.
I was bored one summer many moons ago and decided I wanted to learn a language that didn't use the same alphabet I use (like Spanish, Italian, French, etc.). I chose Russian because I thought it would be "cool."
I learned the alphabet, got some books out to learn the language. It's not easy to learn a new language out of your teens, but I tried. I learned how to "read" the words but never got to the point of translating well. I can say some phrases, understand some words, but can pronounce it all.
I amaze Russian co-workers because they never believe me. They test me buy giving me things written in Russian and I read it back to them.
BlackSwan require no translation. Michel's was a straight translation. The top line, to me says:
Est, oochastnika nebyeedeemch oochastnyekov
nashee paulzauvatelyee pawvesyeelee obcheyee slawznawst
(that's the best that I can "write" with an english alphabet)

LOL, now THAT is cool, hahahahha! I have no idea what you are talking about! Probably because I don't speak Russian (although I can read Cyrillic). I did learn it (when I was ... huh, 10 or so), but only for a few months. Nothing much left (except umbrella; sausage; friend; what's your name and such unimportant words/phrases). I could, probably, translate some of it, only due to language similarity.
Right, I know how to sing Katyusha (lyrics). That would be, more or less, all.
Anyway, and huge for all the effort you made to learn something like that, all by yourself. Honestly, . I bet you can read and pronounce it far better than me. Amazing!
