Hello,

I am in the process of preparing migration to Oracle 11gR2 on
AIX 6.1 with ESS Shark 8700 storage system.

DBA's are considering for future course of Oracle direction that migration to ASM would be relevant. Now we're using raw devices
for datafiles, control files, on-line redo.

We're not familiar with Oracle ASM although some features are supported on AIX level and ESS level.

So I am in dilemma and reasons why should we consider the migration to ASM?

As I did first technical overviews the idea of united concepts to all file/disk needs is very temptative.

How many of you have decided and succesfull migrated to
ASM on similar system architecture: AIX 6.1, ESS, Oracle 11g?

Thank you in advance for your opinions, experiences and references!

As far as I understand Oracle is busy de-supporting RAW devices/volumes. You can still upgrade to Oracle 11gR2 with RAW, but you cannot create new DB's with RAW. Apparently Oracle 12 will completely desupport RAW.

Anyway, ASM is basically RAW with a management/control layer on top of it. It is quite easy to use and definitely recommended for large/high-performance databases.

Best of luck!

Frank
