With this lone information no one can help.
Why didn't it restart?
What is your OS?
Did you look at alert.log?
Did you look at system event if you are on Windows?

Regards
Michel

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried to restart my server. I am using WINDOWS XP SP3. I am gettting general error message, when trying to start Oracle service, saying "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". My eventy log saying "oracle service failed to start due to following reason. The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". Does this is due to any dll conflict. Please assist me since my database is down now.

Thanks again,
Anil

It happens when Oracle does not start quickly enough, you just have to execute start command again (and maybe twice depending on server workload).
