the reason why tried SYSTEM and MANAGER as a user name and password respectively is because i have read in the documentation that these are the default ones. Smile

Obvisouly wrong.

I suggest you use command line sqlplus to access DB.

>Oracle 9i
V9 has not been supported this century.
I suggest a current/supported Oracle version.

I suggest you to read "Getting Started" documents at http://www.oracle.com/pls/db102/portal.portal_db?selected=1

If the database is local and you have only one database,
there no need use host string.
Just sqlplus username/password should work.
Ofcourse, use the latest version. 9i is dead.

V9 has not been supported this century.

Actually, V9 was supported until July 2007, and is still in extended support until 2010.

So it was/is very much supported this century.

Depends on what you did.

You installed 9i.

But did you also create a sample database? Then you would have needed to enter the database name at that point. Have you followed the Getting Started Guide to the letter?

It won't work if you just read bits of it and skip over parts. You have to follow it step by step.

Also, "does not work" is not an Oracle Error. Oracle errors are usually pretty specific, so when someone knows the actual error that someone most of the time will know what's wrong. But nobody is able to troubleshoot a "does not work".

If you are just getting started, and you want to learn then I would definitely suggest you start with version 11 and forget about 9.

"does not work" was a SQL+ error.

no, i did not install a database, i skipped over it.

I may be stuck with 9i for now simply because i do not have the time to download 1.7 gb of 11g, i really need to get into PL/SQL asap and do all the exercises.

thank you Smile

Yes, The XE version of 10g should be able to do anything you need in regards to PL/SQL exercised.

Oh, and Oracle IS user friendly. It's just somewhat picky which user it's get friendly with. Very Happy

When you "Just downloaded" there is no user name, password and host string.

If you are unable to read the actual README that came with the download, nobody will be able to help you.

Go to the URL above click the link "Posting Guidelines"
Go to the section labeled "Practice" & do as directed.

Why did you install an obsoleted & unsupported version?
