Hi,

today i have copied(renamed a datafile with the following steps.
1.) shut down database
2.) copy with dd if= of= bs=1024
3.) startup mount
4.)rename datafile
5.) open database

Why do i need a media recovery on startup for this datfile?
When i startup the DB i get the message "datafile needs media recovery" Shocked
Can anybody tell me why ?

friendly regards

osiris

Because you didn't put it offline.
Just use "recover" and it will be instantaneous.

Hi Michel,

and why do i need the media recovery if oracle dosen`t write any data to the datafile in state mount.
I may be worng but i think i need a media recovery only if any thing has chaged between before copy and after copy.
Or whants oracle the media recovery only to be sure everything is consistent if you rename a file without taking the tablespace offline?

regards
