Dear,

We currently have oracle database 8i and 10g enterprise edition. We currently have disaster recovery solutions in place (physical standby database). We have plans to upgrade to Oracle 11g standard edition. We require the following setup for our new 11g databases;

1) If incase the database users are unable to access the database (could be due to any failure - database, network, power, communication outages, etc.), then they should be able to fail-over to another database which should be in sync with all the updates from the primary database. This database will reside in another different location (over WAN).

2) The fail-back process to the original database should be possible too, with no dataloss. (changes done in the database at the second location should be applied to the original primary database).

Basically we are looking for a high-availability solution(over WAN) from Oracle. We should be able to manage one or more duplicate copies of the production database in physically separate data centers.

We have thought about Oracle RAC with datagaurd, fast-start failover datagaurd, multi-master replication, etc. Please advice us on which feature would better suit us for acheiving our goal with Oracle database 11g Standard edition. I know that many of the features like datagaurd, multi-master replication are not
available in standard edition. Can we have any of these features added as a plug-in with our 11g standard edition. If so, which feature will help us acheive our requirements --- failover over WAN with minimum downtime and zero-data loss.

Please advice. Thanks.
