Dear All,

Will there be a Performance impact if the OS Kernel Parameters are not configured properly. I got the binaries and datafiles from a source server and bought the database up and running on the target server.

The Source and Target Hardware configuration is same. The kernel parameters on source and target do not match.

Now i see that the performance on Target is bad when compared to on Source. I know that, there are a lot more things that we need to consider. But my question is, does the kernel parameters play any role in affecting Database performance?

Thanks in Advance,
Vikramjogi

Yes. Not just "any". It plays rather "important" role.

Thanks Mahesh. I am in the process of figuring out the kernel parameters that are not same on source and target. I will update them to appropriate values.

Just be aware that after making the values the same, you may still have noticeable performance differences.
I am not convinced that the differences between initSID.ora values are the root cause of the slower performance.

anacedent,

Thanks for your reply. My initSID.ora on both the systems is alike. I am looking at OS kernel parameters.

Sorry, I was not paying close enough attention.

Noticeable performance differences should be visible when comparing sar data between the 2 systems; assuming they are of similar hardware configuration.

One we always seem to come across is the default number of semaphores on HPUX11 is never enough for our oracle installations and we end up increasing them several times to find the right anount,
