Hi,

I am trying to use RMAN to do backup & recovery in my system
through PHP.
So, first thing that I wanted to know is about the privileges required to connect
and do the rest of the processes.
I read somewhere that it needs the SYSDBA privilege to connect to the target
database through RMAN. Is it right?

Is there any other privilege that can be granted to a user to do this?
Actually, if possible, I wanted to provide only a limited privilege just sufficient to do the task.

Thanks.

SYSDBA is the only privilege needed and requested.
Also an account and necessary privilege to connect to rman catalog if you use it.

Won't it be too risky to give the SYSDBA privilege to a web user?

I was wondering if there be any single permission(privilege) in the SYSDBA role which could just be granted.

SYSDBA is a whole, it is a single privilege.
Don't give it to an anonymous user.

If you want the ability to limit backup & restore privileges, you may want to consider Oracle Secure Backup.

@ebrian,

As per your advice, I went through few pages related to Oracle Secure Backup(OSB).

Everywhere, the word tape backup is mentioned. Does OSB allow us to backup only in tape media?

Also,I couldn't find how it addresses my problem of limited privileges.

Please shed light over my questions.

Thanks.

The granularity of access rights for OSB is discussed in Oracle Secure Backup Classes and Rights.

OSB allows backup to disk via a Virtual Tape Library (VTL). There are several versions of VTL's that are open source and available for free.
