Hi all,
I wanted to clarify a doubt regarding Archive log. The production server that i was working on was running in the noarchivelog mode. The log sequence has reached around 1490 in about 4 to 5 months(Size of redo log file is 100MB). Currently i am thinking of bringing the database to archivelog mode. The size of the production server is around 125 Gb. I am thinking of changing the archive destination to a separate disk. So,
1)How much size can i provide for the archive log file destination?
2)What will happen if the archive destination gets filled up?Can i delete the older logfiles in that situation?
Pls help me....
Thanks,
Arun.

For calculating the size, check your log file size in windows explorer. Then check an average no of log switches per day.Multiply the no. of days u want to store archives with the avg no of log swithes and each file size. if u have a samller space u will know that u can keep archive logs approx up to so many no of days and u have to delete them before that y archive log delete all or u can delete upto particlular scn or date.
U can run deletion of archive log files to present date-2 days as a daily batch job if u take daily backup or any other form u wish, but in that case u need to make sure that u have a backup befor deletion of archive log files for full recovery.
On our test server we have small space left.so i run regulary batch job for deletion of archive logs.
I think this will help.

Thanks Pranab for your reply. I am using RMAN backup. So i am thinking of using BACKUP ARCHIVELOG ALL DELETE INPUT command to backup and delete the archive destination files.
I am having one other doubt, say we lost few archivelog files, will it cause any problem while recovery using the RMAN utility?
Thanks
Arun.

If u lost your archive it can cause problems if your backup is older than the=
scn up which some archive are corrupt. Then u can only partially recover. If=
data is critical do take 2 or more copies of archive at two or more seperate physically located disks.
That is why if u delete archive log,it is necessary that u have backup before that and if it is batch job, deletion should be fired only if backup is sucessful with no errors.

Pranabh
