hi
would you please tell which database version you are working on?

i think in 9i "alter database begin backup" is not supported, only from 10g it is there.

correct me if i am wrong!

regards..

oraj

oraj is correct, this is a 10g+ feature. For 9i, if you want to do a hot backup without RMAN, then you'll have to place each tablespace into BACKUP mode.
