Oracle Critical Patch Update Synchronization [message #323548]

If I apply a critical patch update (CPU) to the database server, must I apply it to the Application Server (AS) at the same time. In other words, if an application uses Application Server and accesses a database instance on the database server, do the CPUs for database and AS need to be done at the same time?
